September 2024 – June 2025
Children 3-5 yrs old
Program
Our program develops independence, self-help skills, co-operation and positive social interactions. We believe that each day is a learning experience for the child. Our daily schedule consists of both structured and non-structured activities, preparing each child to become confident and ready for entry into the elementary school system.
Daily activities include free play where children have a choice of activities (ie. sand and water play, play-dough, dress up, puzzles, manipulatives), arts & crafts, structured group circle time/story time and physical activities (ie. walks in the neighbourhood, walks in the trails and activities in our playground).
We encourage all children to reach their full potential within an environment that provides opportunities for optimal social, emotional, physical and intellectual development.
For children 3-5 years old. Children must be toilet trained and of age during the month they register.

Philosophy
Our philosophy is to provide a positive, happy, safe, and productive learning environment for children of all developmental levels. Through a wide range of activities the children are given opportunities to problem solve by making choices and decisions for themselves which promotes a healthy self-esteem.
We believe that children learn by experience; it is our responsibility to guide them through a variety of child appropriate activities designed to expand feelings of confidence and success. We model positive social values with an emphasis placed on building life skills, which allow children to be responsible for their choices and actions. We treat each child as an individual with his or her own unique needs and abilities.
Our child care program promotes the inclusion of all people and recognizes the diversity of age, culture, religion, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation and abilities in our community.
Our program develops independence, self-help skills, co-operation and positive social interactions.
We believe that each day is a learning experience for the child. Our daily schedule consists of both structured and non-structured activities, preparing each child to become confident and ready for entry into the elementary school system.
Licensing
Renfrew Preschool is licensed under the Community Care and Assisted Living Act and Child Care Licensing Regulation. The preschool complies by all rules and requirements set out by the Act and Regulation.
Guiding & Caring
We strive to create a happy, caring environment where there is a healthy respect for the rights of others and their property, while acknowledging the rights and feelings of each individual. We encourage the children to talk through their own problems and conflicts, and to make appropriate choices and compromises. However, if a child seems unable to cope in a situation, the staff will redirect that child to a new play area, or ask the individual to sit out until he or she can behave appropriately or provide them with a logical or reasonable consequence for the inappropriate behaviour. Consistency between the home and the Centre is very important in this area. Please feel free to discuss concerns and questions with the teachers.
Staffing
The Preschool Teachers are trained and certified as Early Childhood Educators. They meet all the requirements outlined in the Child Care Licensing Act and maintain a valid First Aid Certificate and a successful completion of a criminal record check.
Elizabeth Casaclang, Child Care Manager
I am a certified Early Childhood Educator and have been in the field for over 15 years. I enjoy hanging out with my family, going for walks, trying new foods, and reading. I believe that the wonder and curiosity of children allows both the child and teacher to learn and grow together. I look forward to welcoming your family to our program. You can often find me in the Programming Office across the Preschool, please do not hesitate to stop by and say hi anytime!
Alice Shiu, Preschool Supervisor
Hello Everyone,
My name in Alice Shiu. I am certified as an Early Childhood Educator, Special Needs Educator, and an Infant/Toddler Educator. I have been working in the Early Childhood field for decades and have enjoyed every minute of it! I love promoting movement and play to foster children’s creativity and curiosity to help them make connections in the school setting. It’s important to me that we create a safe and inclusive environment for the children to have positive interactions and can make friends to develop their social and cognitive skills.
I was born and raised in Vancouver and attended elementary and secondary school in East Vancouver. Now, I have been living in North Burnaby area for over 34 years and spend lots of time with my nephew! In addition to working at Renfrew Park School, I also have a part-time job. When I’m not leading Renfrew Park Preschool, you can find me working at the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) year round in the food and beverage department and have been there for over 34 years.
I enjoy listening to music, playing the piano, baking and cooking, photography in my spare time. I also have a love of travelling and have been to parts around North America, Europe and Asia and plan to explore even more.
One of my favourite activities with the children is facilitating interactive story time.
I warmly look forward to working with your children and hope that this year brings even more interesting adventures.
Michelle Lui, Preschool Teacher
I studied Early Childhood Education at Vancouver Career College and graduated in 2012. Prior to studying ECE, I studied music for three years at Vancouver Community College and Capilano University which focused on Vocal Jazz. I then decided to switch paths to study ECE because of my passion for children.
I am looking forward to meeting each and every one of you. Please do not hesitate to approach me anytime. I am truly blessed to have this opportunity to meet and work with your children and families.
Shu Ying Huang, Preschool Teacher
Hi my name is Ying. I joined Renfrew Park Preschool in 2012 and have qualifications for the ECE license, as well as First Aid. I can speak English, Cantonese and Mandarin.
I have lived with my husband in this community for over 20 years now, and we have and raised two lovely children together. I love to read, listen to music, watching dramas, cooking and spending the day hiking outdoors.
I find working with children in the early years extremely rewarding and heartwarming. It’s amazing to watch them grow and develop. One of my favourite activities to do with the children teaching arts and crafts.
I am looking forward to meeting the new children and parents this year.
Jane Yee, Preschool Assistant
Hello my name is Jane Yee. I am a proud mother of three nearly grown children. I have been living in this community for over 20 years and I have been working as an assistant teacher for the preschool program in this community centre since 2009. My own children also attended Renfrew Park Preschool many years ago.
It brings me joy to work with children in their early years. Singing, dancing, creating arts and crafts are a few of my favourite activities to do with them. I have enjoyed many years of volunteering in my children’s elementary schools and their little league baseball when they were young fostering my breadth of experience in working with children.
I love to travel and explore the world learning new things and collect souvenirs from different cities. In my spare time I also have a hobby of collecting stamps.
I am thrilled to get to know you and your children this year!
Shirley Huang, Preschool Assistant
My name is Shirley. I have been with Renfrew Park Preschool since 2013. Since joining, I have thoroughly enjoyed my time working here. My favourite part about working with the preschool is playing and reading with the children. I speak English, Cantonese and Mandarin.
I have received Responsible Adult in Childcare Settings Certification and also have First Aid Certification from the Canadian Red Cross. I love that I have been able to hone my expertise in childcare organization and preparation.
With over a decade of volunteer experience, I have been able to give back to my son’s school communities throughout his elementary and secondary schools, and other organizations such as S.U.C.E.S.S. Through those opportunities, I have developed strong communication and interpersonal skills.
In my spare time, I enjoy travelling around the world with my family and love capturing all the wonderful moments shared through photography! At home, when I have free time, I explore new recipes to expand my cooking skills.
I am excited to get to know you and your children at our preschool!
